EDEN CYCLING ASSOCIATION\'S TRANSFORMATION, TALENT IDENTIFICATON AND CAPACITY BUILDING INITIATIVES

Eden Cycling Association held a capacity building and talent identification training camp for more than 50 of our riders (from our community and
neighbouring PDI areas eg. Knysna, George, Pacaltsdorp, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Bridgton) at the Oval Track in Oudtshoorn on Youth Day
(16 June 2016). The riders were given the opportunity to ride on the oval track with their bicycles and were given the opportunity to participate in a
safe and controlled environment. They were also taught technical riding, training tips as well as mechanical skills from myself and our Schools\'
Representative, Lee Aries.

We also provided them with boerewors rolls to eat as many of them do not get the opportunity to get proper nutrition. Eden Cycling Association gave this braai for the riders. It was an extremely successful day and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. A number of these riders will be
representing Eden in this week\'s Cycling Youth Festival in Oudtshoorn (27-30 June 2016).

EDEN SPORTAKADEMIE ONTWIKKEL ATLETE HOLISTIES

OLYMPIC DAY THE ROAD TO ALBERTINIA

The Western Cape`s Olympic Day celebration will this year take place in Albertinia on 26 September 2015. There is a three-month lead-up to the big event called the "Road to Albertinia", a travelling exhibition which will be moving from place to place in the Eden District. The first step on the road was a two-day exhibition on 25 and 26 June at the De Jager Sport Complex in Oudtshoorn.

Learners from local schools had the opportunity to find out about the Olympic Games, light a symbolic Olympic torch, participate in story-telling sessions, complete quizzes and share their questions and views with Bennett Bailey of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. Olympic Day is an international event to celebrate the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894.

The international theme is "move, learn and discover". The values of the Olympic Games are excellence, friendship, respect, Olympism, joy of effort, fair play, respect for others, pursuit of excellence and balance between body, will and mind.

DCAS and its partners - the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC), the Eden District Sport Council and the Hessequa Municipality - are proud to spread the spirit of Olympism on the "Road to Albertinia

OLYMPIC DAY EVENT 2015 in ALBERTINIA

The OLYMPIC DAY EVENT for 2015 was allocated to EDENSC to host on 26 September 2015 in Albertinia between 09:00 and 16:00.  The sport codes that will be hosted there will be athletics [4km run], Rugby [Sevens], Tug of War, Cycling, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Netball, Football, Dominoes, Jukskei, Paralympic sport codes and some Indigenous Games. In some codes games will be organised between teams and other will be on offer to the participants to learn about and to try it out.  It will be concentrated on the youth [schools] and participation rather than competitions will be the priority.  Some background:

In 2013, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) selected the Western Cape to host the inaugural Olympic Day Event of South Africa. The Overberg District Sport Council – newly established at the time- hosted a successful Olympic Day under the auspices of SASCOC and WCPSC and in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and the Overstrand Municipality. The Olympic Day was held on 5 October 2013 at the Hawston Sports Ground, Overstrand within the Overberg Region of the Western Cape.

The 2014 event was hosted by the Central Karoo District Sport Council in the town of Prince Albert. Both events was ‘n major success. As mentioned, this year’s event will be hosted by the Eden Sport Council in partnership with DCAS, Hessequa Municipality and the relevant sport federations.

It is the intention of the EDENSC to make this a huge success – but this can only happen in partnership with the relevant EDENSC federations. Thus this email.  Verbal contact have already been made with some of the code. This is to invite your federation to play a part in bringing your sport to the rural area of Hessequa – on the fantastic new sport stadium in the exiting town of Albertinia!

“This is why EDENSC is the #1 sport council in the Western Cape – because of you!”
