EDENSC MEMBERS MEETING 2018

The EDENSC hosted their annual Members Meeting on Thursday night 25 Oct in Conference Hall, Civic Centre, George. 38 Federations and 74 persons attended. The MM offered the opportunity for members and management to interact on mutual matters. Marcelle Musson, WC Manager of the NLC, presented on the procedures of lotto funding specifically on sport clubs, sport federations, schools and sport councils.

 As part of their vision of honouring top performances, EDENSC embarked on the project of continually awarding accolades to sport persons who have excelled beyond the normal expectations. The first of the CA (Chairpersons Accolade) were presented at the Members Meeting of 25 Oct 2018 in George. The first 3 recipients were:

•    Elma Davis (Eden Bowls) for winning the SA Masters Ladies Champioships

•    Billy Radloff (Eden Bowls) for winning the SA Masters Men Championship

•    Minke Janse van Rensburg (Swimming - Sport for Special Needs) for her meteoric rise and setting a number of SA, Africa and World records.

The WC Sport Photographer of the Year Award was also handed to Deidre Cloete (Kachelhoffer)   as she could not attend the event in Cape Town earlier.

What makes the performances of Elma and Billy so impressive is that they (and Eden Bowls!) are the first ever bowlers to bring back these titles to Eden!. Desmond Speelman, chairperson of EDENSC, presented the awards.

Two new co-opted members of the EXCO were introduced – Elma Davis [Athletes Representative] and Michelle Behrens [chairperson Colours Commission].  Desmond Speelman, the EDENSC chairperson also thanked the outgoing Athletes Representative, Kittie Terblanche, on her unselfish contribution towards sport in Eden.

EDENSC can boost with two finalists at the SA Sport Awards on 11 Nov 2018 in Johannesburg – Minke Janse van Rensburg [Sport for Special Need Persons] in the category of Newcomer of the Year and Surfer Kids [Lifesaving NPO of Mossel Bay] in the category Recreation Sport Body of the Year.  Our best wishes accompany them.

In his report Jean Neethling of DCAS mentioned that no less than 19 major events funded by DCAS were hosted in Eden.  The chairperson unequivocally stated that the official name of EDEN SPORT COUNCIL will not be affected by the new name of the Garden Route DM at present.  The Eden name replaced the SWD name 4 years ago and the process of change-over is not even yet finished.  43 of the 51 affiliated federations however are functioning under the Eden name.  EDENSC will meet with Garden Route DM to discuss the co-operation between them.

The financial position at present is stable and the affiliation fee had been increase to R600 from the 2019/20 financial year whereas the administration is on a sound footing.  People are invited to visit the website               [ www.edensc.co.za ] and also to find the latest news on EDENSC’s members activities on their Facebook page Eden Sport Council.

Tribute was also paid to sport persons who lost their lives in the near past – André Stander [George Herald] and the Prins boy from Eden Sailing!

EDENSC just want to thank all the Eden media for their coverage and promotion of sport in our area – without your contribution sport won’t have reached the level that is experienced!

EDEN SPORT COUNCIL AGM 2018

On Thursday night 7 June 2018 the Conference Hall, Civic Center, George was the venue for the Annual General meeting of the Eden Sport Council. 48 of the 58 affiliated members were present [43/51 federations and 5/7 municipal sport councils]. This constituted a record attendance of 83.3%!  This just again highlighted the fact that the EDENSC has been adjudicated to be the leading district sport council in the Western Cape - most probably the country!  DCAS headquarters was represented by their Deputy Director: Sport promotion, Bennett Bailey. A moment of silence was also adhered to paying respect to an ex-EXCO member and Chairperson of SWD Martial Arts, Phil Anderson, and all the other sport persons that passed away the past year.

Each chairperson present received a EDENC button from the EDENSC

Chairperson, Desmond Speelman.

In his Annual Chairperson's Report Desmond Speelman gave an complete overview of the activities of the past year. This was well received by the attendees as well was the Audited Financial Report.  The secretary, Dave van der Walt, mentioned that in all the years of the EDENSC [and its predecessors - SWD SC, SWD Sport Form], not a single qualified audited financial report was tabled - a feat that very little sport bodies can boast about!

No motions were received and no nominations for the post as secretary as Dave van der Walt indicated that he has reached his "by-sell" time.  On request of the EDENSC and condoned by the meeting, he will stay on until such time a suitable person can be co-opted to take over.

In conclusion Bennett Bailey requested to address the meeting. He mentioned that when he heard of the fact that it will be the last AGM for Dave van der Walt, he realized he want to be present. He spoke in his capacity as a sport person who has come a long way with him - in fact, since 1986, when they rubbed shoulders in the negotiations between SAAAU and SACOS on the athletic front. He mentioned that Dave and the likes of Danie Malan made the transition on athletic front more smoothly - even robust deliberations took place! When SA Athletics lost almost all their sponsors, Dave was instrumental in negotiating with new sponsors. It was tough times and each grouping was fighting for their own turf. He had a number of mentors in his life and he credited Dave van der Walt as one of them. The referred to characteristics like frankness, hardworking, never late and loyal. He was instrumental in the establishment of not only the EDENSC via its predecessors, but was also one of the persons that established the WCPSC.

He mentioned that Dave don't want to overstay and want to make space for a successor. The fact that no nominations were received might be indicative of the fact that they are scared off by the legacy left behind and the high standards set for this post. He wished him a well-deserved rest time and to enjoy his neglected family!

  • Persone wat ‘n beduidende bydrae tot sport in hulle leeftyd gelewer het, verkieslik ouer as 55 jaar en verkieslik ook afgetreë;
  • Persone wat as ikone in hulle gemeenskappe beskou word;
  • Persone wat ‘n rol gespeel het in die ontwikkeling van sport voor 1992;
“Once a Legend, always a Legend!”

Vir meer inligting of die rapportering van sulke persone, kan Dave van der Walt by 082-7734901 of sportcouncil.eden@gmail.com, gekontak word.

VIER EDEN SPORTLEGENDES DEUR WESKAAP SPORT MINISTER VEREER

Indien daar in julle gemeenskappe sulke potensiële legendes rondloop wat our as 60 jaar is, laat EDENSR asseblief weet daarvan!

BESTMED EDEN STREET MILE SERIES 2017 LAUNCED!

The 2017 BESTMED Eden Street Mile Series was launched on Wednesday 15 November 2017 at the ATKV in Hartenbos. This is now the 3rd series after expanding to George and Hartenbos as well. BESTMED, one of the leading medical schemes in South Africa, increased their sponsorship for this holiday series this year. Also, the cycling component is extended to include a criterium at the NMU event on the George campus. This event is organised under the auspices of the KKAF and in partnership with ASWD, Eden Cycling, NMU and the ATKV.

After the official welcome by Mornay Beukes [ATKV Reosrt Manager], Petrus Boukes [Deputy Director Sport, NMU] explained Madibaz Sport involvement – basically to enhance sport in the Eden district and offer opportunities for local students to study from home!  Hans van der Veen, [chairperson of KKAF and LOC] gave a background synopsis of the history of the series. Interesting was the fact that the first sub-four minute miler in South Africa, matriculated at the Oudtshoorn Boys High!  Wicus Kotzé [Executive Managed Healthcare] then outlined BESTMED’s involvement in sport – to grow a more healthier nation by prevention! He also indicated that BESTMED is at present the 4th largest medical scheme in South Africa.  LJ van Zyl [SA Olympian and BESTMED Ambassador] sketches the importance of races like this to cater for our top athlete and provide them with opportunities.

After small beginning as part of the Oudtshoorn Athletic Holiday meeting [old Yellow Pages], the street mile idea grew to a Street Mile series that include three races in three Eden towns during the December holidays.  The past two years the cycling component was included that added more colour and prestige to the Street Mile Series. This year special beach activities are added by BESTMED to also cater for the general holiday public. For the first time medals will also be awarded and this plus the attractive prize purse of R95 000 will definitely attract the top 1500/mile athletes and cyclists to the Eden district!  The uniqueness of the series lies in the fact that each of the towns will retain its unique street mile identity and still form part of the BESTMED Street Mile Series as the Grand Prix winner will be determined over the three races.

The first race of the series will be hosted in Oudtshoorn as the BESTMED KLEIN KAROO STREET MILE. The venue will be Baron van Reede Street on Saturday 16 December 2017. The second race moves to the NMU George Campus [Saasveld] on Monday 18 December 2017 as the BESTMED MADIBAZ STREET MILE. The third race will be hosted on 20 December 2017 at the ATKV terrain in Hartenbos named the BESTMED ATKV STREET MILE.

EDEN SPORTRAAD BEMAGTIG LEDE IN FINANSIËLE BESTUUR

1.1              Opvolgprogram vir persone om oor te neem wanneer nodig;

1.2              Federasies en sportrade moet hulle hou by hulle kernbesigheid;

1.3              Etiese leierskap:

1.4              Leierskap met morele waardes;

INTERNATIONAL SAILING IN MOSSEL BAY

The FIREBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS is hosted by the Mossel Bay Yacht Club between 11-16 December 2017. This was preceded by the SA Championships [4-10 December]. The excellent facilities of the MBYC was the centre of this major sailing event that was mainly sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport (DCAS), who have generously contributed to the event. Other big sponsors include Sanlam Private Wealth, MPK Inc., Europcar and Puma. Without the support of all our sponsors, contributors and Mossel Bay Tourism, it wouldn’t be in a position to stage a World Class Event.

Although the international economic climate has reduced the number of boats attending the event, we have an extremely competitive fleet. Sailors from the UK, Switzerland, France, Czechoslovakia, Canada, USA, Australia, Kenya, Namibia and South Africa will be competing for the world title on the seas of Mossel Bay. The competition will be intense as we have the best sailors from each of these countries that are hungry for that title. Under the favourites are:

The current World and UK Champions UK: Tom Gillard and Richard Anderton, the current European and Swiss Champions: Claude Mermoed and Ruedi Moser; the current Czechoslovakian Champions: Johana Napravnikova Koranva and Jakub; Napravnik. Johana was also selected for the Czechoslovakian Olympic team, the Current Australian Champions: Ben Schulz and Jack Lidgett, the current Canadian Champions: Joe Jospe and Tom Egli, the current French Champions: Juin Franck and Jean-Francois Nouel, the current Kenyan Champions: Alastair Bush and David Carroll and the current South African champion Anthony Parker.

SA GOLF TEAM NAMED FOR WORLD AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MEXICO - JOVAN REBULA CAPTAIN!

CAPE TOWN, 24 June 2016 - The South African Golf Association (SAGA) have named Southern Cape`s Jovan Rebula and Central Gauteng pair Marco Steyn and Dylan Naidoo to represent South Africa at the biennial World Amateur Team Championships in September.

The International Golf Federation moved the date for team selection forward to 1 July this year and we considered a number of factors in deciding on the Eisenhower Trophy team, including the rankings and the players` performances over the last 12 months, said SAGA acting president, Geoff Taylor.

Jovan is currently the top ranked player on the SAGA Open Amateur Rankings and he secured his place in the team with consistently good performances at home and abroad. He was also the natural choice to captain the team in Mexico, having represented South Africa in various international team events in the last four years.

Marco and Dylan merited selection not only based on their individual records at home, but their outstanding performances for South Africa in several team events in the last two years.

James du Preez, who is currently ranked third, has been named the non-travelling reserve, should Jovan, Marco or Dylan be unable to take up their spot in the team and SAGA Golf Integration manager Eden Thompson will accompany the team to Mexico.

The Eisenhower Trophy draws the very best in amateur golf from around the globe and all three our players have proven themselves worthy to challenge. They are confident and capable to face strong international players and have proven themselves worthy of representing South Africa at this prestigious international team championship.

Rebula rose to number one with victories in the Eastern Province/Border Stroke Play and Western Province Amateur Championship in April, a runner-up finish in the Southern Cape Open and six notable top 10 placings on the national circuit.

The 19-year-old Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member also moved to 110th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings following a top 15 finish in the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this month.

I`m absolutely over the moon to have made the South African team, said the George golfer from the London Golf Club in England, where he is competing in the prestigious Brabazon Trophy.

It is an incredible honour for me to represent our country at the Eisenhower Trophy. I have dreamt about this and worked really hard towards achieving selection and it is going to be something special to tee it up in Mexico with Marco and Dylan.

I am really grateful to the SAGA for selecting me and indebted to my parents and the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation, who has given me incredible support and opportunities to realise my dream.

Eighteen-year-olds Steyn and Naidoo from Modderfontein Golf Club established their credentials early in the selection process.

The pair excelled at junior level, including two Sunshine Tour Junior victories for Steyn in 2015. Naidoo won the Nomads SA Boys U-17 and U-19 Stroke Play Championships and also took second in the internationally acclaimed Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in the United States.

They pair further entrenched themselves in the team in 2016 when Steyn followed victory in the Free State Open with four top five finishes, while Naidoo also notched four top five finishes, including the Sanlam SA Amateur Championship final.

Marco and Dylan also hold impressive records in team events, which further supported their selection, Taylor said.

They were pivotal to Central Gauteng`s victory in the 2014 Challenge Cup Teams Tournament and represented the union in the SA U-19 and SA U-23 Inter-Provincials. Last year Marco was also a member of the victorious Central Gauteng team at the Premier SA Inter-Provincial. They helped Tuks Sport High School to victory in the 2014 SA High School Championship and sealed a hat-trick of wins for Modderfontein Golf Club in the Louis Oosthuizen SA Junior Club Teams Championship.

Both players contributed to South Africa`s victories in the All-Africa Junior Golf Championship in 2015 and 2016 and they recently combined with Dylan Mostert and Herman Loubser to secure a joint fourth place finish at the Junior World Cup in Japan, where Dylan also finished second overall in the Individual Competition.

Steyn and Naidoo described the Eisenhower Trophy as the ultimate prize in their short careers.

This is all I have been working towards for the last two years and to crack the nod for Mexico is the ultimate prize, said Steyn. This is such an incredible honour and I am stoked beyond words.

Jovan, Dylan and I have a lot of work to do over the next couple of months to ensure that we are in peak condition, but we will go above and beyond to make sure we fly the flag for South Africa with pride.

Golf RSA National Squad member Naidoo agreed.

The World Amateur Golf Championship is the ultimate prize for an amateur golfer; it\'s the highest amateur accolade you can get. I have had some cool moments in my career, but to represent South Africa at the highest level has always been my dream, so to get the big phone call was huge and I am really, really happy that I made the team. I am super excited to join Jovan and Marco and we will give everything we\'ve got to win this for South Africa.

The 2016 edition will be contested from 21-24 September at the Mayakoba El Camaleón Golf Club and Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club, designed by Pete Dye and Greg Norman respectively.

South Africa\'s best previous performance in the World Amateur Team Championship was a runner-up finish at Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina in 1980.
